Asylums??? why dont they use asylums any more? i know it was cruel but i wanna no more detail
What did patients wear in asylums in the 19th century? I'm trying to establish what the patients in a victorian asylum, near the end of the 19th century, would have been wearing. Would it be whatever they happened to arrive in? Or was some kind of clothing issued? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Does anyone know of any old insane asylums? I'm wanting to write a ghost story about one, so I'm wanting to know some of the old, cruel methods they used. Like the lobotomies at Danvers state. Plus, I find it an interesting topic. Sites would be helpful. Thank you!
Abandoned insane asylums in LA area, plz help? I need help finding an abandoned insane asylum in the LA area. I live in Santa Clarita (by magic mountain) and I don't want to drive 2 far. Its my friends birthday and we are looking for a good scare if you know of any haunted abonded hospitals please let me know. Or websites where i can find some, ive searched the net a bunch its difficult
We need to re-open all of the insane asylums and have the death penalty everywhere. Agree? Just read about the guy who mowed down a bunch of amish schoolkids today. Why would somebody target the amish?? The a-hole Baby Boomers and liberals closed down all of the insane asylums because it was deemed to be cruel to the inmates. So now we have these nuts running around free. Maybe they take their medication, maybe not. Lock the nuts away and I DON'T CARE IF IT IS CRUEL. I care about those poor amish families. We also need the death penalty everywhere. Enough already. You kill somebody and you did it purposely, you're dead. End of story. Life is NOT precious. There are too many of us, and we can do with weeding more than a few out.
If lead paint is so bad, where are all the insane asylums? Lead paint was used for decades in the U.S. and was only outlawed in the late 60's. In fact, the law was written where even after it was outlawed manufacturers of paint were still allowed to sell any inventory they still had, so guess what, they stocked up. The lead in paint is suppose to affect the brain. Children had lead paint on their toys for decades----ate lead paint chips off from window sills. No telling where else they were exposed to lead paint-----in quanities greater than today. If lead paint is so terrrible, where are all the insane asylums where the brain-dead kids who were exposed to lead paint in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's are kept? Is this latest lead paint scare just another media over-dramatization of a problem and another media event for our Congress? Kris N-----Actually the original Tin Man was played by Buddy Ebsen, who lived after that incident (I never heard about it being the lead in the paint) and went on to pllay Jed Clampett in :The Beverly Hillbillies". Guess you never heard of that, though.
I have a phobia of mental asylums!? But I want to study forensic psychology. I hear you have to intern at an asylum, anyway I can get out of that? I have horrible nightmares about being trapped in them forever.
Are there any asylums that let you rent their buses? I want to take my cellar people on a trip, but I don't want them getting away. I'm thinking if they were on a bus that was suppose to hold crazy people, no one would listen to them when they yelled for help.
How much usually cost for the asylum attorney in general? One of my friend will apply for the political asylum in US, I know there's no fee for this thing if you apply by yourself. But because she has a limited English and minimum knowledge of the Law in US, she's planning to hire attorney. And because she doesn't have much money, she needs to know how much it will cost in general? She from third world country that a lot of conflict happen overthere , I feel bad for her and please I need serious answer. Thanks!
What countries, and how rare is it, have in the recent past granted american citizens political asylum? Venezuela is offering political asylum for US troops who do not want to be sent to iraq. are there other countries? most countries in the EU have signed a treaty called the Dublin Convention, which says that a person who is travelling from any of a number of so called safe countries, should be denied asylum. The united states is on that list. but what if someone is seeking protection FROM one of those safe countries? could an american travel to mexico, first, as a loop hole? and what about other powerhouses, such as Russia and China, that are large enough not to need to bow to pressure from the U.S. state department. would it be easier to be granted asylum there? what could be offtered to refugees, such as education? is there a large expat community in those countries that would make it worth while for someone to want to go there without feeling alienated and alone? can you apply for asylum at an embassy worldwide or do you have to be inside russia etc when you apply?
Insane Asylums / Psychiatric Hospitals anyone? I'm writing a book about a girl (15) who spent sometime (involentary) in a Insane Asylum/Psychriatric Hospital/whatever you would like to call it (when she was in her preteens: 10-12 yrs old) and I have a few questions: - What would be some reasons she could have been sent there? - What would her time there be like? - What would the longest posible time she would have been there? - She has some semi-rich relatives, how would that effect her time there? - How would she mostlikely be afterwards? Would her Lifestyle change in anyway? (she was sent out because her Uncle gained custody on her and took her out -- doctors would have said she needed to be there longer.) - Would it be posible that she received memory lost? From Medications or abuse? Also any additional information about Insane Asylums/Psychiatric Hospitals would be great!! Also the Asylum is a bit... uh.. like what you would have seen a hundred years ago... (It would be complated to explain how they get away with it... it's a fantasy book so there is a reason you just have to read the book to get it) The time period for the Asylum would have been about 50 to 100 years ago... but I also want to know about modern ones...
lunatic asylums? i was just wondering what used to happen in lunatic asylums, also are straight jackets and padded cells still used today?
Insane Asylums? Why did Insane Asylums get taken away? Like why aren't there anymore around and only psych wards in hospitals and jails?

Are insane asylums for suicide attempts immoral? Really now, your fed up with life, you hate it, you try to kill yourself... next you wake up in the hospital, and now you hate everybody so much more, after telling the therapist that you don't have a deseise you just want to die he puts you in an insane asylum... How is this right? He wants to die why not let him? Instead of keeping him locked up and treated as if hes crazy and making his life SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more miserable?!?!?! Im so fed up with people thinking they know whats best!!! ITS THEIR DAMN CHOICE DON'T STOP THEM!!! who agrees and disagrees? that is all :) Phil...do you have any idea what you just said? Suicide is illegal?! If you killed yourself would you get put in handcuffs and dirven to the police station, then locked up for killing yourself? Anyone who does that IS insane..still shouldn't be locked up though, everyones insane in their own little way...:D
can anyone tell me of any good factual websites about people wrongly committed to insane asylums in history? In my lit class we had to pick two books to read with something similar connecting them. I chose One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Girl, Interrupted. we have to do a paper based on a thesis statement about the novels and research to back up our statement. My thesis is " According to the standards established by society, the characters are not just 'crazy', they are certifiably crazy. Throughout history, society has dictated which norms are socially acceptable and which are not. The main characters in both of these novels have become the stereotypical 'lunatic'. However, in reality, their so called lunacy is a simple rejection from society." I would like some sites that talk (preferrably in depth) about people who have been deemed crazy and/or sent to a lunatic asylum because they didnt fit what was socially acceptable at the time. ex: homosexuals, social oucast "odd" people, victorian women sent by their husbands for not being "submissive" enough or just they could gain their estate
Can anybody give an understandable explanation as to why failed asylums seekers are not being deported? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml;jsessionid=JIT5PK0A2EFDTQFIQMFCFF4AVCBQYIV0?view=CROSSWORDLOGIN&grid=A1NoFooter&nextPage=/Xgv2/wXeR.WZvwF?teiK~Qm0qqj0mo!rgeJ~lOu!GgD22KDgJMGveDR~ZDwi&_requestid=1946052 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/20/nasylum120.xml http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/20/nasylum120.xml SORRY THE FIRST LINK IS INCORRECT, SEE LINKS NUMBER 2 &3
Old sanitarium / insane asylum Conditions, etc? I am doing some research on old treatments in early 1900 sanitariums/ insane asylums. Both abuse, and just the ways they used to treat conditions. I have tried searching the internet and keep coming up with very little information. Location of the place is not an issue. I just need an informational site with old pictures and a very good description about what went on. Maybe I am not using that right key words, who knows.. But some help would be wonderful! Thank you!
Victorian era - insane asylum? Mrs.Atwood becomes the gaurdian of Charlotte. Mrs. Atwood lost her daughter, a wild and spirited girl, many years ago--the daughter had eloped with a penniless Italian and had died giving a miscarriage. Charlotte is very much like Mrs. Atwood's daughter, so Mrs. Atwood believes that its her duty to guide Charlotte down the right road. But she becomes so obsessed in this...madness of trying to save Charlotte, becoming abusive and such. Mrs.Atwood begins to call Charlotte her daughter's name. Is this a good enough reason to put someone in an insane asylum??? Or, if you're a wealthy person, do they not put them in an insane asylum. What kind of asylums were there?
Tell me about asylums from the gothic era, please? A friend of mine asked if I could look up anything on "asylums from the Gothic era"...so around 14th century. I have looked through google and found nothing really. I would especially like information of the treatment and medical practices on the prisoners/patients .. the inner workings, the "dark" side of the asylums.
Should the Catholic church provide reparations for survivors of the Magdalene Asylum laundries? For those that don't know, the Magdalene Asylums were institutions in Ireland where young women accused of immoral behavior (often becoming pregnant out of wedlock) were locked up and forced to work in the laundries as slave labor for the catholic church. Outside businesses paid the church to have their linens cleaned, and the girls received no money and were forbidden from leaving until the nuns decided to let them leave, or a male family member demanded their return. Many remained their whole life. The women received no compensation, and many suffered lasting health problems, like arthritis, as early as their teen years from being overworked in poor conditions. The last one was open until 1996. Should the church have to provide some reparations to those who were forced to work in the asylums? After all, the church made a lot of money off of it. Shouldn't the people who were forced to do all the work be entitled to some compensation? There's a movie on it called the "Magdalene Asylums" and the several main characters in the story are based off women who told their story for the documentary "Sex in a cold climate." One girl was taken from an orphanage when she came of age and brought to the asylum. When she asked why she ended up in the asylum, she was told the orphanage directors thought it best, because she was pretty and would be a temptation for young men. Another woman in the documentary was sent by her family after she was raped by a male cousin and told other family members. She believed she was sent away so the family could get rid of her before she told anyone else and brought shame on the family. She was there for years until her little brother came of age, found out where she had gone, and came to get her. Whoops, the movie is actually called "The Magdalene Sisters."
Asylum seekers, accommodation and benefits? Where does the information come from that asylum seekers are either entitled to, or given, housing and benefits on entry to the UK? In my experience of working with asylum seekers, those who are accommodated in anything other than a hostel/ bedsit are unaccompanied minors who become the responsibility of the local authority. Asylum seekers also have NO RECOURSE TO PUBLIC FUNDS. This means they survive on food vouchers provided by the National Asylum Support Service (NASS). THEY ARE NOT entitled to income support, JSA, or any other 'benefit' as you and I would know them. Of course once their status becomes 'leave to remain' this changes but then they are no longer ASYLUM SEEKERS. Where does this confusion come from? Is it tabloid press propaganda?
Does anyone know the difference between asylum and political asylum? Back in the days of the cold war and there were very few people claiming asylum, it was always called political asylum. The people claiming it had to prove that their life was under threat from their own Government simply because they opposed the Government. Virtually every asylum seeker became a famous person because they had to escape through back routes, such as Donald Woods. Today it seems that they have dropped the word political, people are buying regular airline tickets, leaving their country simply my going to the airport and getting on a plane, then arriving somewhere and claiming asylum because his father in law threatened his life. My question is has the word "Political," been dropped from asylum officially and it is no longer political asylum, ie, your life under threat from your govt. and now it is simple asylum and you claim it for any reason?
Asylum, Seekers-Are They Being Sent Back Home? Shortly after Iraq was liberated(?) I remember seeing on TV a jumbo jet being boarded by loads of failed asylum seekers. The reason this was being done was because they thought that Iraq was now a safe haven for them to go back to. Does the Government still do this sort of thing? Or are the asylum seekers now using the appeal system to extend there stay in the UK? Any answers appreciated.
Benefits To Asylum Seekers? I heard sometime ago and read this last week.... An asylum seeker or or somebody who has been granted asylum can get benefits from the state in the UK. Now this bit I need an answer to... Also an Asylum Seeker or someone who has just been granted asylum can arrange for their loved ones (family) to get English benefits sent to them in their home country? Is this true or have i misread this. Thanks
ERITREAN ASYLUM SEEKER PRIVATE i need to br refugees to day? ERITREAN ASYLUM SEEKER PRIVATE JOURNALIST IN THE SUDAN Mr. Yonas Embaye is seeking political asylum in the Sudan because of Eritrean Government Human Right activity . The Sudanese Commissioner for refugees ( COR ) is considering Mr. Embaye's request for a refugee state . UNHCR in Khartoum Mr. Alexdander Novikai protection officer in Khartoum , is following up the case with COR . In the meantime Mr. Embaye is holding a COR document which confirms his states as a pending case . Mr. Abdelaziz Abubeker assistant of commissioner officer in El Genina said that Mr. Embaye's application will be processed according to the regulation of asylum seeker act of 1974 . The Eritrean Government is against of the free press . And that's the reason why Mr. Embaye was in prison for a long period of time , and even the other private journalist which they still are . The Government of Eritrea only use 49% of the The International Human right Agencies agreement , Community Protect Journalist ( CPJ ) added ten journalist who are still in prison since 2001 . As we all know there are twenty thousand Eritreans who cross the border to the Sudan and Ethiopia since 2001 . sincerely Mr. Yonas Embaye
do you think asylum immigrants in UK should be banned from having kids? i mean if someon came here to escape from unfair life, his government and problem, it is he/she, and it means they dont like the place they been born, so they moved, they got asylum and live in uk, but I think they should not be allowed to have kids as asylum seekers and have right to vote (i dont know if they have or not) in short, they came here to live peaceful, i see no reason for them having kids, if they want kids, they should stay in their country, but it is easy to come here as asylum seeker but often they come here for easy money (as many poor people in countries where government is democratic, people can not use asylum or get visa so they can not do it, i think it should be at least this fair to ban them from having kids in UK and any other country) btw. im immigrant myself:) i do belive in human rights , that why i think like i think :) you have right to chose, be free, or have kids in your country, as my dad says "world aint black and white, it aint Western (as kind of movie) " and if you ask me about human rights i can tell you that my granddad died in country i come from so it can be free now, my dad been chased by government, the thing is that if you decide duck instead than fight for freedom, your right is to live and nothing more, as i dont like cowards mkay? and ive moved here coz here is better education and there is nothing more to fight for in there :P voodoobluesman im not talking about EU citizens but about asylum imigrants:D so i dont know why you mentioned Poland isntead of for example Arabia... or anything
