Abandoned Asylums Knowledge Base
Website that had many galleries of photographs of abandoned asylums? I'm trying to find a website I found a few months ago that had postings to different photographers' pictures they took of various abandoned asylums. One of the most prominent ones that sticks out was the asylum where the movie Session 9 took place. Can anyone help please? There were some beautiful pictures there! Sorry, but searching search engines is the first thing I thought of doing. No luck.
Are there any abandoned insane asylums in North Carolina? Part 1) Are there any abandoned insane asylums located in North Carolina that are open for touring? I have this weird fascination for insane asylums. I guess it's cause the treatment didn't work and so many lives were lost. I know they are scary, but I am mesmerized. So are there any? Can you also give me links to pictures and or a website of the asylum?
Why are abandoned hospitals/asylums some of the most scariest places to "Visit"? I've always wanted to explore an abandoned hospital, although I have not heard of any in my country Finland so I can't do anything about it. The main reason why it is dangerous to visit an abandoned hospital is that there is a high possibility for the entire building to crumble upon you due to nature getting a hold of the buildings structure, crumbling it. And many other sharp glass and syringes that can wound you.
Do you know where any abandoned mental hospitals/asylums in the Chicago area? Abandoned Asylums in Southern Ontario? Don't call me a freak, but I was wondering if anyone knows where some abandoned mental asylums in southern Ontario. Abandoned Insane Asylums? Okay, so I think it would be kind of cool to visit an old, abandoned, insane asylum. But usually when I find one on the internet that looks interesting, the source is old and the place has been demolished and/or renovated. I'm particularly looking for on that's not too dangerous. I don't want to fall through a floor or get crushed by the ceiling... Anybody know some good places to go? Oh yeah, I live in New England, so the closer the better.
Abandoned insane asylums in/around Los Angeles? Hi, I'm planning on pulling a crazy prank on my boyfried. I'm going to drug the fuck out of him before he goes to sleep next Friday, and take him via car to the abandoned insane asylum that you guys say is the scariest, and put him in the creepies hospital ward I can find. A dark, dingy one with bloodstains and/or body parts would be good. Then, I'm going to dress up as a creepy old-fashioned asylum nurse and come in with a huge knife, wake him up and scare the living shit out of him. Aren't I the most romantic person? ;) So yeah, where is the most terrifying abandoned insane asylum around the Los Angeles area? Man, this prank is going to be GREAT!! :D Oh, and YES!! This will be on YouTube. I'll tell you my account name, which I am yet to create, on Wednesday night. V Okay, so the nearest abandoned insane asylum to Los Angeles is? Or if it's too far away, any others terrifying abandoned places I can access? Thanks.
Do people really go missing in Abandoned Insane Asylums? Okay, me and my friends are going to go explore a 77 year old abandoned insane asylum and I saw a video on YouTube of some kids going through one and I looked at the top rated comment and this was it exactly "Lucky some bum didnt jump out of the shadows and kill your asses. This is how kids dissappear.....seriously...be carefully goin in places like like.......you honestly dont know what you'll find....." So do people really get killed going into places like that or what?
How do I get permission to visit an abandoned Insane Asylum? I live in California and I want to get permission to visit some Insane Asylums in my area. Air Softing in abandoned Insane Asylum in a small town in Wisconsin? My friends and i have heard of an abandoned insane asylum in a small town near sheboygan. Now we understand that if we get caught there could be some charges but, we were wondering what exactly the charges would be and if its worth it to go airsofting in an abandoned building? Personally i think it would be amazing and if the charges were maybe $200 at most i think it would be worth it. The town is small and may have only a few cops and the building is out in the country with maybe 2 farms near it.

Can anyone give me info on an old Danville Asylum/Abandoned buildings? Hello! I go to school in Danville KY and I recently discovered a group of abandoned buildings which I assumed to be a very old school, but I later found out that there also used to be an insane asylum here as well. Can anyone give me any information on the buildings I found or on the asylum? I couldn't find an exact address for what I found but it was on or near South Third street in Danville KY. Thanks! By the way the buildings are abandoned, not currently in use.

Abandoned mental institutions in Brisbane? Hi guys! I'm planning a photoshoot for Tuesday in Brisbane. I'm looking for a place that's either an abandoned construction site, warehouse, asylums and hospitals. Something with that haunted kind of aura. I'm interested in Wacol Abandoned Mental Asylum and the Goodna Lunatic Asylum but I'm unsure of exactly where they are. Directions would help a lot! Thanks in advance. I'll be taking a train from Central - I don't have access to a car. Are these places even walking distance from the train stations?

Permit for visiting abandoned buildings? There is an abandoned insane asylum in my area and I wanted to go and take pictures for educational/artistic opportunities (plus it seemed cool). I was wondering if there was any legal way to go about this. Are there permits I can get and if so, where should I go for that?
What movie is about missing people, children i think? I think it involves an abandoned asylum or school... orphanage. I think it has a younger woman and a middle aged man as the main roles but don't let that discourage you from answering if it doesn't quite fit. The Orphanage and Forgotten both look good but not what I'm thinking of. Sorry for the lack of details, every guess is appreciated. I found it it was freedom land, thanks to seeing her in the forgotten trailer.
Is there a list of abandoned places that are okay to visit? I got arrested like a month ago for visiting an abandonded insane asylum... POLL: I have Midget Mansion, the donkey lady and an abandoned insane asylum in my town, can you top that? Midget Mansion burned down and is now luxury apartments, but the ghosts of midgets still haunt it.....that's what I heard. Thank you for taking my poll, especially if you are short in stature or have a pet donkey :) Our downtown is nice too, except our street in a dirty "river". I like the cobblestoney-looking street in your town. In makes me think of murdering prostitutes like in that movie, "From Hell". http://i.pbase.com/v3/69/502169/1/50768951.bridge.JPG Awww....the link doesn't work :( http://farm1.static.flickr.com/41/75324592_b63decdebc.jpg?v=0

Should i have any concerns about evil spirts in my new job? Well my new job was just built on the grounds of one of michigans most haunted places....Please hear me out..i work at Toyota Technical Center and this building was just constructed this year.. last year on that property sat an old abandon asylum where its been reported of murders and all that crazy blah stuff..well since its been closed people always use to go up there at night exploring to see if its haunted and its been reported as one of the most haunted places in michigan or whatever..do to what lots of people say they have witnessed...people even use to go up there alllllll the time and do that satanic devil worshiping stuff...ive always had a strange vibe driving pass that place when it was there..that i wouldnt even drive past at night...and its coincidence that i just got hired there at Toyota...now my question is should i have any doubts or be worried about working there..i mean its all new and high tech and cant even tell it use to be an old asylum..cuz its all brand new like all new buildings and soooo high tech.and at any given moment there are 800 busy workers working...should i have any concerns? i mean im strong in my faith and know evil spirts cant mess with me..but i need this job i mean i live in Michigan come on you know how our economy is.lol p.s ive been up there when i was younger at night to explore with friends...and it was crazy
Any good exploration places in Kansas? I recently read about Urban exploration, and the topic interests me greatly. I used to do all kinds of exploring when I was younger, we found all kinds of weird fenced off bunkers in a forest near this air force base once, also a military training course we played on. Twas alot of fun, and that kind of thing has always been an interest of mine. We moved to Kansas about 2 years ago, I am near Wichita, and I was just curious to know if there were any abandoned factory's, asylums, hospitals or the like near here. Anybody know?? Thanks.
Were there any formal adoptions before the Church started abandonded children rescue missions in the 3rd C. CE The Church is historically credited with the creation of the modern adoption system, taking in abandoned and unwanted children and placing them with Christian families, in obedience to the Biblical commands to care for orphans, in the 3rd Century CE. Under Justinian rule, this system transfered to the government and "orphan asylums" replaced the Church in running the Western world's adoption system... but did formal adoptions ever take place before this? And what was the process? Who governed this?
Would you read a choose your own adventure book? I feel like writing and I've always wanted to write a Choose your own adventure, I have a couple of ideas which I'd like some ideas on. My first idea is "You wake up in a padded room, the air is stale and musty, getting to your feet you move to the heavy padded door which grinds at the hinges as you push it open." Basically its about "you" waking up in an abandoned Asylum (mental institution) your last memories of were having a drink with a friend when someone offered you a drink. Obviously being a choose your own adventure its about the different stories you can follow I suppose the main storyline is "You" trying to find out 1. Why you are here 2. What is this place 3. How to get out of this place 4. Is your friend here somewhere? It would be more of an adult book with vivid horror and supernatural descriptions. Second Idea: A girl's choose your own adventure, when I was younger I had all the boys choose your own adventure books as they were hand me downs from my brothers... I thought some thing very magical and prettiful. (yes thats a word) Very cutesy but empowering at the same time. If anyone has any other ideas thats cool too. I definitely want to do a choose your own adventure because I've always wanted to write in second person!!!
cool things to do in maryland? OK well i'm 17, im really bored and recently ive been looking for awesome things to do in maryland. i live in howard county. Does anybody know the name of this novel? It's a novel and I believe the author's first name may be Catherine. It's a series of novels based on time travel. The main character falls back through time randomly while riding her bike one day at an abandoned old estate. There she meets a wealthy heir and falls in love with him. In the series she keeps going back and forth in time and in the last book finally she finds a picture taken by the guy in Egypt in like 1920 or something and there's a watch with sand in it - something special with that too. In the second middle book the guy is sent to a mental asylum by his father for saying that the girl was a time traveller. His father wants him to marry a rich lady. I am just saying all the random details I remember because I really want to find this series of books. If this rings a bell with anyone, please give me any clue to the name of the novels.
Chinese Medical Doctor lied and abandoned 2children. What to do?? He didn't introduce me to any of his friends or relatives.I've only met his parents once in Beijing.I don't even have an address for any of his 4 sisters or parents. No way to find out in a city with a populaion of 2 million.Known him 10 years. He went to the top medical school in China and has a masters in orthopedics. He told no one about us.I just recently hunted down one of his old college classmate and she told me an earful. First she thought I was some Shanghainese girl who was 2-3 years younger than her then she told me that he had been seeing all the girls at his workplace. Keep in mind I was here in the states raising our first child and couldn't understand why he refused for us to return back to Beijing to be with him. Now I know why.He asked to borrow 40,000 from my parents. When that didnt' fall through he psychologically abused us. He ignored us, refused to take the drivers license, always turned down any invitations to be seen in public with us. B/c planning to seek asylum.
oujia board story time anyone? My friends & I used to call ourselves Ghost Hunters (ha!) and do oujia board every weekend. We once did it in a cemetary & talked for about an hour with a nice spirit named Mary (hm..) Nothing bad has every happened to me & I still feel like Mary is protecting me. I've played it in abandoned pools, burnt down houses, abandoned insane asylums, "enchanted" forests, etc. I never go without a big group of friends and we are always careful about what we ask and where we play. It's just a stupid game after all! The only person who controls your fate is yourself. Don't tell me that it's dangerous or that I shouldn't play it. I'm a teenager & I already know it's a bad game. I don't care. I just want to hear your most unusual, scariest, most unbelievable experiences with the oujia board. Let's hear 'em!
Ghost Hunting in the mountain area!? Anyone know where my friends and I can go ghost hunting this weekend? A haunted hotel or something similar would be cool. Or an hotel close to an old abandoned insane asylum. Got some suggestions?

Do you find it exciting to visit abandoned places at night? I'd find abandoned places from now and then, take a couple of friends and go there. My favourite had to be Whitby Asylum, which is now completely demolished, we could all hear each others heart beating, breathing and what not. Markham Plane Graveyard was good too, we were gonna sleep in one of the planes but we chickend out lol. Are you an urban explorer? If so what's around you? http://www.ontarioabandonedplaces.com/whitby/whitby.asp pics don't look that intimidating?, try going there at night time

Know of any haunted places in your area? Every year we roadtrip to different parts of the country to visit so called haunted places. We've been to asylums, churches, houses, hotels, abandoned building and even a few graveyards. If you know of any haunted locations in your neck of the woods, kindly post them here. If you have any info on them, that would be a huge help too!

The Nine Gates? I lived for a time in Maryland, and close to time for me to leave I heard about an abandoned insane asylum nicknamed The Nine Gates. It genuinely had 9 gates, and if you proceeded thru each one progressively worse paranormal things would happen, supposedly someone/thing trying to kill you as you went thru the last one. It was supposed to be in Northern Virginia. I, unfortunately did not have the time or oppertunity to investigate, the guy who told me about it said I was too innocent and would definatly get hurt... Has anyone else heard of this? Has anyone tested the story? Does anyone have any stories about it?
Blessing an object? I just bought a silver ring that was found in an abandoned insane asylum. With the ring coming from a place where so much pain happened I was wondering if there was a way I could "bless" it. The person I bought it from claimed it was haunted, but I kind of don't believe that. Is there a way to prevent any negative energy from the ring affecting me? I'd hate to have a cursed ring.
readers this way!? Please can give me you views on this Conflict between the known and the unknown has lead many to be classified as insane. As we came towards the doors of the abandoned asylum we all felt a mixture of seduction and repel. The image of decay tormented our imagination with fear of ghosts and terrors. Yet still our egos pumped desire and excitement through out body at the prospect of a challenge. I couldn't admit to being scared, as I was so thrilled to be out with the gang. It was as if we were prisoners of war, blindfolded and stepping onto uncommon ground. Grabbing each other hands and jackets I felt apart of something. Scot became the naturally leader and I took his hand. "I'll go first,” Scott said with his usual cheeky smile. "Look there’s light through the hallway" Harry reminded us as I used my foot to keep the door open. "She’s just checking we are not being followed" Replied Ellie as she defended my nervous behaviour. Looking around the room a painting of a riverboat sat above the receptionist desk. Even though it was still very much in good condition the white paint on the walls surrounding it was cracked and peeling. This had once been a room that was welcoming but now it was cold and eerie. "So how long are we going to stay in here" I asked hoping the group would protest to leave soon. "Until we find the morgue!" Answered Scott as he found some broken glass stuck in his shoe. Reassuring myself that by dinnertime tonight I would be home and safe I kept a tight grip on Scots hand. Often he would pull it away and bring it back as if to tease me into wanting his comfort. "Look through here" Ellie gasped as she ran into a small room. "What is?” I replied. "Its an old patients art room" Harry said as he got his camera out. "Wow a few crazy peoples drawings” Ellie mocked
Movie Title Help!!? What is the movie about a game that people play, that they lock these people in this abandoned insane asylum, and there is like 5 stories to the building, and like 4 out of the 5 girls die... or something like that... It's an older movie... Do you know what I'm talking about?
any haunted places? i thought i might want to check out some truly haunted place this halloween just for the fun. does anyone know any haunted places in the chicago suburbs area? mostly lake county? ive heard of an abandoned insane asylum but idk where it is i've also heard of "satan's pool" anyone know what that is?
trying to find the name of a movie i recorded on VHS a few months ago but my timer must have been off? cause it started recording after the opening title/actors names were displayed so i don't know the name--the movie looks like it was made in the last couple of years--it involves a Halloween prank about a group of kids going to tour an abandoned insane asylum which was rigged by one of the group's buddies--but there is an actual vengeful spirit who was one of the "residents" & one of the girls is able to have flashes which allows her to see past events---i think Richard Roundtree plays the cop but when I searched him on IMD this movie doesn't come up so it's someone that looks alot like him if it's not him
Why do we take so many things for granted? I just watched a documentary on physically and mentally handicapped kids due to the Chernobyl disaster in Eastern Europe who are abandoned in orphanages and asylums which have no money or resources. Not even a tv as one boy sadly said. And here we are complaining about not having the latest gadgets or fashions or whatever. \And then when I think of society's obsession with the 'rich and famous' it makes me very sad. Yeah sure celebrities donate money but nowhere near as much as they could. Society has become so materialistic it's absurd. Of course there are those special people, the volunteers that devote their lives to helping others but we need A LOT more of them. What do you think?
I need the name of an old, scary computer game..? I used to play this one computer game all the time about ten years ago or so... I don't remember much about it, but I do know it involved several different locations/levels including an asylum, a small, abandoned town with weird people/deformed kids, and a pumpkin patch where you had to kill a ton of vicious crows to get through to the next part. I also remember something about a burned church steeple and ruins of a building with framed pictures (clowns possibly?). Sorry for the shoddy description, but if anyone could help me out it'd be great. Thanks!
Moses, like other "adoptions" prior to the Church's ministry, were not actually formal adoptions. Foundlings became the property of anyone who found them and chose to keep them. Infant exposure was common, and unwanted children left outdoors either (1) died due to exposure to the elements, starvation, etc., or (2) were picked up and usually entered into the slave system. In Moses' case, he was found by royalty and thus escaped the slave system. Foundlings could never serve in certain roles under ancient laws, these including the priesthood and certain government offices. When, however, did FORMAL adoptions begin, if any occurred before the 3rd Century Church?
Sign of the times? REST OF THE WORLD VERSION: The squirrel works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building and improving his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool, and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the squirrel is warm and well fed. The shivering grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold. THE END THE UK VERSION: The squirrel works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool, and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the squirrel is warm and well fed. A social worker finds the shivering grasshopper, calls a press conference and demands to know why the squirrel should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others less fortunate, like the grasshopper, are cold and starving. The BBC shows up to provide live coverage of the shivering grasshopper; with cuts to a video of the squirrel in his comfortable warm home with a table laden with food. The British press inform people that they should be ashamed that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so while others have plenty. The Labour Party, Greenpeace, Animal Rights and The Grasshopper Council of GB demonstrate in front of the squirrel's house. The BBC, interrupting a cultural festival special from Notting Hill with breaking news, broadcasts a multi cultural choir singing "We Shall Overcome". Ken Livingstone rants in an interview with Trevor McDonald that the squirrel got rich off the backs of grasshoppers, and calls for an immediate tax hike on the squirrel to make him pay his "fair share" and increases the charge for squirrels to enter inner London. In response to pressure from the media, the Government drafts the Economic Equity and Grasshopper Anti Discrimination Act, retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The squirrel's taxes are reassessed. He is taken to court and fined for failing to hire grasshoppers as builders for the work he was doing on his home and an additional fine for contempt when he told the court the grasshopper did not want to work. The grasshopper is provided with a council house, financial aid to furnish it and an account with a local taxi firm to ensure he can be socially mobile. The squirrel's food is seized and re distributed to the more needy members of society, in this case the grasshopper. Without enough money to buy more food, to pay the fine and his newly imposed retroactive taxes, the squirrel has to downsize and start building a new home. The local authority takes over his old home and utilises it as a temporary home for asylum seeking cats who had hijacked a plane to get to Britain as they had to share their country of origin with mice. On arrival they tried to blow up the airport because of Britain's apparent love of dogs. The cats had been arrested for the international offence of hijacking and attempt bombing but were immediately released because the police fed them pilchards instead of salmon whilst in custody. Initial moves to then return them to their own country were abandoned because it was feared they would face death by the mice. The cats devise and start a scam to obtain money from peoples credit cards. A Panorama special shows the grasshopper finishing up the last of the squirrel's food, though spring is still months away, while the council house he is in, crumbles around him because he hasn't bothered to maintain the house. He is shown to be taking drugs. Inadequate government funding is blamed for the grasshopper's drug 'illness'. The cats seek recompense in the British courts for their treatment since arrival in UK. The grasshopper gets arrested for stabbing an old dog during a Burglary to get money for his drugs habit. He is imprisoned but released immediately because he has been in custody for a few weeks. He is placed in the care of the probation service to monitor and supervise him. Within a few weeks he has killed a guinea pig in a botched robbery. A commission of enquiry, that will eventually cost £10,000,000 and State the obvious, is set up. Additional money is put into funding a drug rehabilitation scheme for grasshoppers and legal aid for lawyers representing asylum seekers is increased. The asylum seeking cats are praised by the government for enriching Britain's multicultural diversity and dogs are criticised by the government for failing to befriend the cats. The grasshopper dies of a drug overdose. The usual sections of the Press blame it on the obvious failure of government to address the root Causes of despair arising from social inequity and his traumatic experience of prison. The cats are paid a million pounds each because their rights were infringed when the government failed to inform them there were mice in the United Kingdom. The squirrel, the dogs and the victims of the hijacking, the bombing, the burglaries and robberies have to pay an additional percentage on their credit cards to cover losses, their taxes are increased to pay for law and order and they are told that they will have to work beyond 65 because of a shortfall in government funds. Parenting Without Punishing? Chapter 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Letter to an Expectant Father [Summer, 1986] Dear Patrick : Your excitement in anticipation of the birth of your first child - I heard it in your voice yesterday as we talked on the phone - took me right back 22 years when I, too, was about to become a father. So I admonished you, as I do all new parents, "Don't ever punish that child!" When I said that our two sons had been brought up successfully without punishment of any kind, you asked me to write about it for your magazine [John Holt's "Growing Without Schooling"] Just As I was thinking, as you are now, what kind of parent I was going to be, and agonizing over the "duty" of "correcting behavior", something happened that changed my life: a copy of A. S. Neill's incredible book, SUMMERHILL - A Radical Approach to Childrearing, fell into my hands. Neill taught me how extraordinary the possibilities when we really respect children, and place our trust in them and the democratic process. As a victim of severe child abuse at the hands of a brutal "guardian" in a freelance "foster home" (this was in the back hills of Vermont in the 30s), I could see, at first, few alternatives to "a good slap" or "a sound thrashing", when "needed". I had known no other. Abandoned by my mother at age four and by my father at age seven, I was "farmed out" to work for my keep. For five years I labored, serving as a front for a criminal abortion racket. I was beaten regularly and severely with a hardwood stick - for the "sin" of being a child. My indoctrination in the hellfire and brimstone of Christian fundamentalism forced the belief that, having been born in sin, I deserved the frequent beatings, the shaming and humiliation. Endure it without complaint, and my reward will be in heaven. Expect no happiness in this life. In college courses I discovered there were other ways of controlling a child's behavior. Yet, as a philosophy student, I was rankled by the question: Control for what purpose? And for whose? Later, as a public school teacher, I never used punishment, never sent a pupil to the principal, and yet had no problem with discipline. Nonetheless, as I approached fatherhood I assumed I would have to spank, determined as I was to be a "good father". (Such is the strength of the roles society assigns us.) But I couldn't accept that. Is there no better way of treating children? I asked. So I researched the psychology literature, and could find not one alternative to the behaviorists' reward and punishment, carrot-and-stick, conditioning. Any suggested alternatives to assault amounted to subterfuge, trickery, or outright lies. All seemed manipulative, exploiting advantages any adult has over the innocent and trusting. To me, those were all unethical, disrespectful, demeaning, and certainly harmful. If we can't make ourselves worthy of the child's trust, I asked, then who are we? If a child's faith in our word and our protection is not sacred, what is? Then I learned that almost all Americans, to some degree, have a deep emotional investment in dominating and exploiting children to meet their own emotional needs. And the reason they do, though not consciously, is to suppress the horrible memory of their own victimization as children. My own gulag-type experience, I saw, was no different in kind from 95% of all other children - only in degree. Nearly all children are either attacked with sticks, switches, paddles, and other weapons, as I was, or they were slapped, spanked, shaken, pinched punched, and kicked. All were yelled at and suffered humiliation and indignities and told it was not only good for them, it was by Biblical command. Some children today endure "only" face slaps, spankings, "go to your rooms" and the now-popular "time-outs". Others, like me, barely escape with their lives. The list of those who don't survive it grows with every edition of the news. Despite the headlines, our ghastly tradition of physical and emotional violence against children continues. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Little children love the world. That is why they are so good at learning about it. For it is love, not tricks and techniques of thought, that lies at the heart of all true learning. Can we bring ourselves to let children learn and grow through that love? John Holt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few years later, my college students, future teachers and parents, vehemently defended their "right", their DUTY, to force children, "in any way necessary", to submit to authority. Otherwise, they feared, the inmates would take over the home, the classroom, and/or the asylum. My sons, they argued, must be exceptional, or over-conditioned "robots". Or that I had exceptional patience, (a charge which invariably provoked laughter). Nothing would convince them that punishment was not necessary - until I brought my pre-school boys and their mother into the classroom. Henry and Russell, by their naturalness and authenticity, brought all argument to an end. Just by being genuine, they charmed their pants off. To go back: I began with vowing NEVER to use physical punishment. And for good reason: I could not risk releasing on children the rage within me, internalized by my earlier beatings. Then I became intrigued by the philosophical question: How can ANY punishment of children be justified - ethically or otherwise? I searched the literature for months - and could find no valid justification. The pro-punishment argument came down to this: The child must submit to our will, because children are born bad, and we must shape them to suit us and society. That, clearly, would not stand as valid on any grounds. When the babies came I realized I knew nothing. So I looked to them to teach me who they were, how they learn, and how they should be treated. Then my real education concerning childrearing began, for my sons taught me the most important things I know. My FIRST surprise came in discovering how EASY it is to raise children if they are not "taught lessons". I had imagined I would have to develop patience - of which I had not an ounce. To my astonishment, it didn't require any. The alternatives to punishment now seem obvious to me, and so much fun! The SECOND surprise was how well behaved, how spontaneous and enjoyable and lovable children can be when not living under the threat of violence or humiliation or "correction". And how they naturally search out what they need to learn - without lessons, without teaching or preaching or any sort of coercion. No "preparing for life," no "bending the twig," no shaping and forming. No authoritarian control. The THIRD big surprise was how HAPPY our family was in contrast to the suppression, the competitiveness, and the underlying resentment so evident in other homes, those heavy vibes that kill spontaneity and warmth. On witnessing the callousness and incivility dealt children in stores, homes and the street, my sons would whisper in shock and horror, "Daddy, why is that lady hitting that boy?" The FOURTH surprise to me was how quickly and eagerly they assumed the responsibility for their own behavior, how mature they were compared to others their ages. This quality is what impressed my students most. And the FIFTH and biggest surprise was how a simple change in my view and thinking - that is, dismissing as an option all punishment - brought about a positive and remarkable change in me as a person. Unburdened of father-authority-punisher self-concept, I was rapidly becoming a more understanding, a more compassionate, a more loving person. My colleagues and friends began commenting on it; I was a lot more enjoyable to be around, they said, - what happened? I felt better about myself, more self-accepting and approving, therefore I developed more tolerance, more compassion. I had more self-respect, confident now that I was not the kind of person who would exploit or harm any child. And I was greatly unburdened of the internal conflict between loving my children on the one hand, and inflicting pain in the name of "parental duty" on the other. I am now convinced that letting go of the punitive mentality can rapidly make any person happier, more self-accepting, and more understanding, even if they have no children of their own. Comes the inevitable question: So what did you DO instead of punishing, instead of spanking, say, for "disobeying" by running into the road? (Why is this always the example? It is the universal justification for walloping children - "for their own good".) Their mother and I recognized that punishing does not teach safety, it teaches fear. And all punishment forces the burden - sometimes life or death - squarely on the child, conveniently allowing the parent to avoid responsibility for the safety of the child. (I TOLD him not to run into the road!") The boys and I decided to install an inexpensive three-foot high wire fence (see PWP issue No. 1) around the front yard where they could play in safety, in view and within earshot of the kitchen. During the times we walked near traffic, we held their hands, with no fear-talk about getting run over, killed, so forth. Instead of the bedtime tantrums we saw in other homes, we developed an evening routine of clean-up, sitting on laps and story reading plus music listening. In our weekly family meetings, bedtime was negotiated, arrived at by consensus. With shared authority, there was no problem. The clock, not the parents, announced time for bed. No tears, no hassle. In family meetings, everything was fair game for questioning, for discussion and negotiation - with one exception: Health and Safety. Here we, as parents, reserved dictatorial control. The message was clear and firm: "We are responsible for your growing up safely and in good health. It is our job to protect you, even from yourself if necessary, and we intend to do a good job of it. But unless we can justify a given instance as a matter of either health or safety, no one has a right to interfere with your chosen activities." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- European Countries That Forbid Any Form of Physical Punishment of Children: Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Austria, Cyprus, Croatia, Latvia, Germany, Italy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The boys readily accepted that - indeed they were delighted with limits that made sense, combined with a general freedom to follow their interests. We sometimes explained dangers, but without instilling fear. We rarely announced rules to obey. What few rules there were came out of family meeting decisions. The boys were then able to enjoy their childhood, with its serious business of play, and know the security of parental care. The alternative to punishment is not neglect, as so many parents assume - and even seem to wish. It is not "permissiveness", the claim of those who know only the extremes of punishment and neglect. The alternative to punishment is accepting the RESPONSIBILITY of providing a growing-up environment free from fear, free from hazards, and free from domination, and not forcing it on the children with punishment. Don't forget to send me a birth announcement. If you ever think it "necessary" to inflict punishment in any form on your child, give me a call first. - Norm UP-DATE: Henry and Russell, now ages 35 and 36, live happy and fulfilling lives with their respective successful careers and families. Both earned college degrees, neither went to jail despite all the dire warnings from friends, colleagues and students that they would tear out the drapes, dump paint in my typewriter, and set fire to the cat. P.S.: Henry and his wife have made me a grandfather. To all of us, the idea of punishing little Charlotte is unthinkable. Why We Can't Wait I AM PUBLISHING THESE CHAPTERS BECAUSE we need to get serious about making changes in how children are viewed and treated. We cannot wait yet another generation to reduce the hatred and violence in our fast-deteriorating society, and because the price of punishment is too high in human suffering. For most of my life there was at least the excuse that we didn't know any better. But serious large-scale research on the long-term effects of punishment began in the 1940s, and during the past 25 years overwhelming evidence has been amassed showing the counter-productive nature of punishment. The cost in human suffering is beyond calculation, the cost to taxpayers amounts to billions of dollars annually in medical care and therapy responses to spouse-bashing, mental illness, large-scale clinical depression, plus a justice system to deal with nearly every adolescent criminal offense from date-rape to murder. The lovely old farmhouse we lived in had beautiful oak frames around each door. Henry and Russell had just begun drawing on them when I happened by. "Orange door frames?" I asked. "That won't do." But how can we draw on the walls with our crayons? Henry wanted to know. "Well let's figure out how that can be possible," I said. The discussion ranged from coloring books, to large sheets of newspaper on the dining room table, to maybe bidding on an easel at an auction, if there was an auction with one and no one else bid on it. But the discussion always returned to the desire to draw "standing up" and drawing large-scale. Admittedly the wall was perfect for that. "How about if the wall has the paper on it?" someone - I think it was I - said. "We don't have paper big enough", came the objection. "Then where can we find big-enough paper?" Further talk brought us to newspapers again, but it was already "drawn on" - with ink. What about newsprint, newspapers before it was covered with ink? Where can we find some? The newspaper printing plant! A quick search in the phone book, and fast phone call gave us the information we needed: Yes, they had "end rolls" of newsprint they'd give us cheap. A trip to the plant and $3 got us all the paper we'd ever need. We began on one corner of the dining room, exactly the place they had begun drawing on the woodwork, and proceeded, masking-taping our way, all around the room, skipping the doorways, of course. Then the entire family joined the "crayon party". After a week or so we tired of looking at it, tore it down, put up fresh paper, and did it again. What a great time we had! That went on for several days. When it was over, it was over. They never again wrote or drew on the walls, or even mentioned the idea. http://www.nopunish.net/pwp-ch2.htm
