How much money should a person ask for in a medical malpractice case.?

Well a friend of mine had a knee replacement about five years ago it just started to hurt really bad medical attention was given only to find a foregin object in the joint space of the knee. How do you begin calculation on something this terrible.And the object is still in the knee, after five years waiting to be removed
