In some countries hospitals are free for citizens, how do they hospitals get the money?
First of all, my father told me that in France that some hospitals are free for patients. He said there was a system behind it. I'm curious how those hospitals giving free medical service to patients get their money

- taxes...everyone pays higher taxes
- They bilk the folks out of taxes
- gonvorment
- The government. The government gets the money from taxes.
- It is part of the National Health Service.
- Maybe the government.... Wish they would fiqure it out here in the US ☺
- The govt. taxes the people and then the health care is free. Its called Socialized Medicine.
- The government provides. Its called socialized medicine. Take a look at Sweden
- they tax the crap out of working people and then they force the doctors to work for less. the good doctors go to private clinics where they will make more money. socialized medicine sounds great but just think about it this way. tell me one thing that the government is in charge of that actually works?
- Taxes. and in countries where there is free medical care, it usually takes longer to see a doctor like 6 months. Not sure on hospitals though.
- Through very heavy taxation. The same thing shillary and those other dummies keeps trying to shove down our throats.
- In Switzerland school and medical expneses are absolutely free. However, they pay 60% sales tax.
- government
- Tax dollars. The taxes people pay are funneled into the healthcare systems and educational resources. It's a wonderful idea, but I doubt the US could put it into practice smoothly. Check out "Sicko" by Michael Moore. It's full of complaining and griping, but there was a segment on France's healthcare and educational systems.
- The only ways governments can fund health care for free is to tax the population or business, or for the government to run a major profitable business- such as some Middle East countries do with oil profits.
- The thing is, even with taxes they might not get enough money. It is possible that they invest some of the money that they receive from the government.
- They do that where I live in Texas. There's a "hospital district" that covers several counties, and the people who live there pay for the indigent patient care with a percentage of their property taxes.
- Nothing's completely free. ;) Hospitals (and anything else) that offer free or reduced cost care to their patients receive funding from the government. The government receives its money from the populace in the form of taxes.
- As a proud Canadian we fund our hospitals from yes, taxes but also from lotteries. Every Canadian is entitled to free health care. My husband had emergency brain surgery by the best brain surgeon in the county and it didn't cost us a dime.
- well, some countries are corrupt so probably the hospital got their money from their citizens. I mean the government must have told the citizens that they were doing some kind of project and they raised taxes higher than usual.
- From the taxes....its the civilized way to go....
- Nothing is free, and if it is, it doesn't amount to anything. This is one of the big delemas in life. Do you make the individual pay for all services he recieves. This is a nice thought but a lot of people can't afford to pay, there there is a shortfall which people must make up by paying extra taxes. There is also the idea that taxes are required to pay for services for people that can't afford to pay for them. No matter what you may want to call it, the rich end up paying for the poor. Fair or not, this is the way that life works.pp
- England and Canada both have universal taxes to match their universal health care, so you get sick, everybody pays. both countries have long lines waiting for complex medical procedures, prompting some to come to the U.S. for treatment, especially if the treatment is needed immediately or is lifesaving
- They are government funded.
- from the people they pay it in taxes!!! ask the english what there vat is running!!!
- First of all nothing, nothing is free. Funds to run the government are raised by initiating some sort of tax., whether it be on exports, sales, income, value added,or some other charge against employee income. From these collections the French government doles money to run hospitals whose services are free.
- Nothing is free. The money has to come from somewhere, and guess what? It comes out of out tax money. It's going to be paid for by some one. IT COMES OUT OF THE HARDWORKING, TAXPAYERS, PAYCHECK!! Do you look at your pay check and wish you had more take home pay? The Government is run by our tax money. Every time special interest groups get money to make a study, for the new media to report the results on the daily news, you can be sure that, they acquired our tax money from our government to pay their wages and pay for the study. Listen to the news. They report some kind of results from some irrelevant survey or study 2 or 3 time a day. Sorry, I didn't mean to get started on politics.
- In Australia we have Universal Health Care. It is paid for by our taxes. Hospital is free, but you may have a wait depending on 1) how serious your condition is, and 2) how "popular" your condition is. For instance my friend was diagnosed with advanced cancer and was in hospital getting the best treatment in 3 days. But for something like a knee replacement or a cataract, which are popular and elective, you might wait 3-6 months.
- Here in France the health system is free and excellent, however, I pay a little more for that extra special treatment. Our taxes pay for it, it is affordable on account we don't spend billions of euros supplementing illegal immigrants or on fighting for a lost cause (Iraq) however, as I am now retired I don't pay taxes, my habitation tax is also free but I still have to pay land tax of 675 euros per year
- Taxes take care of it in most countries. In the US there are hospitals that DO operate by charging the more affluent a little more to cove r cost of the poor.
- taxes
- taxes just like we do only we pay through the nose
- They are free here in Australia its part of the services provided by the Govenment from taxes paid by the citizens. And No our taxes are not harsh but what we pay is well worth it. No one here dies because they cant afford cancer treatment or a heart transplant or anything else for that matter. All women have their babies free in hospital. If Australia can do it why cant others, especially the US
