How long does it take before one is given political asylum in the US?

This is affirmative asylum, meaning I am legally in the US as a student. I also need to know how long before I can apply for permanent residency, granting I am approved for asylum. The opinions of those who went through this process would be highly appreciated.

1. get a lawyer for sure!
2. You may claim political asylum starting the first day you set foot in the US. If you want to become a legal citizen, you must live in the US for 1 year without leaving. I'm not sure if having a student visa will help or hurt your political asylum case. You might be better off just applying as a student.
3. YOU can't get political asylum unless you are being threatened by you government for some reason and you still need a good case. Don't try to screw the american legal system do it legally and the right was go and apply for citizenship!!!!
