  1. Clinical and counseling psychologists often work in psychiatric hospitals. You'll need a Ph.D., so hit the books!
  2. Typically, you are more likely to find a clinical psychologist working in the setting you described rather than a counseling psychologist who often specialize in less severe forms of mental disorders. However, in many states you can work in those facilities with only a master's degree. It's best to check with your state's Board of Psychology.
  3. any kind of psychologist. There is no special kind.
  4. I have worked in acute psych wards for more than 12 years and have never worked with a psychologist other than the one who comes in as needed to do neuro-psych evaluations. The staffing at the units I have worked on include psychiatrists, rn's, lpn's,mental health assistants, social workers, and activity therapists. You may want to research this in the state or area you wish to work in. There are many rewarding careers in mental health with good pay that do not require as much education as a psychologist.
  5. neuropsychologists
