  1. These places are very weird. You have to check them before entering anyone there.
  2. I think that the people are scary, but that they're not crazy. There is no crazy people. They speak the truth, but they've been so traumatized, that it comes out in a different, abnormal way. But they're not crazy.
  3. Well, to begin with, the term "insane asylum" was dropped about 50 years ago in favor of "mental hospital" or psychiatric ward. From what I have seen, there are few long-term care facilities any more. Today's wards are designed for acute care. Once patients are stabilized, they are returned to their home, group home or whatever. "Insanity" is the legal term for mental illness, BTW.
  4. Hmmm, interesting question. I think that they serve an important role in society. They keep people safe in some difficult situations. They help the individual return to a higher state of functioning and increase communication among the team of workers caring for a person. They offer a controlled environment where medication changes can be made while keeping a close eye on the person. The hospital can set up a behavior plan where he or she can learn to use better coping skills. If a person is motivated for treatment or at risk for hurting themself or someone else or cannot care for him or herself, the mental hospital is a good environment. Hope these ideas help, Miche
  5. i think someone would go insane if they had to stay in one of those...i don't see how they treat a creepy person by putting them in a creepy place

  7. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Welcome to where time stands still no one leaves and no one will Moon is full, never seems to change just labeled mentally deranged Dream the same thing every night I see our freedom in my sight No locked doors, No windows barred No things to make my brain seem scarred Sleep my friend and you will see that dream is my reality They keep me locked up in this cage can't they see it's why my brain says Rage Sanitarium, leave me be Sanitarium, just leave me alone Build my fear of what's out there and cannot breathe the open air Whisper things into my brain assuring me that I'm insane They think our heads are in their hands but violent use brings violent plans Keep him tied, it makes him well he's getting better, can't you tell? No more can they keep us in Listen, damn it, we will win They see it right, they see it well but they think this saves us from our hell Sanitarium, leave me be Sanitarium, just leave me alone Sanitarium, just leave me alone Fear of living on natives getting restless now Mutiny in the air got some death to do Mirror stares back hard Kill, it's such a friendly word seems the only way for reaching out again.
  8. I can offer some things I've read that seem on target as a sociologist. Erving Goffman, famed american sociologist, and also chair of the national mental health research committee, wrote a great read called Asylums and Other Total Institutions. In this book he calls prisons, institutions, aslyumns, total institutions because residents must work, play, and rest all in one place, a unique environment to say the least all under strict supervision, rules and guidance. These places while necessary for some people do an excellent job of dehumanizing the indivdual and stigmatizing them even further than would be in society. I believe that many of these places are underfunded, use under skilled workers, and are quite uncomfortable. Realize that an insane person isn't going to be a criminal, in some cases possibly, but many people in institutions are just at risk to harm themselves. We have done a nice job of tucking them away and using the old out of sight out of mind philosphy. However, I think these patients experience extremely poor conditions and have no way to represent their complaints and needs due to their conditions. The entire system needs to be overhauled and added long overdue humanity to it.
  9. convenient warehouses for people that are not interested in the concept of "status quo."
  10. I like the tours!
  11. I've never been in one so I may not count. However, I've heard people say that one wouldn't want to be in one. I suppose it's best for the unfortunate and society. If they truly believe in God without going over-board they may learn, while there, to handle their fear and tribulations. I pray, they that they will feel protected and safe, but not only when they are in the harbor. I pray that they have protection and safety even in the midst of the storms of life.
