BS in Respiratory Therapy useful?

I'm currently a freshman at The Ohio State University. My major is Biology, and I'm in the honors program. After my first quarter at school I realized that I really didn't enjoy chemistry. I previously wanted to be a dentist, which requires many advanced courses in chemistry and so I have been reconsidering my aspirations and looking for other health care related fields that I could get in to. OSU offers a BS in Respiratory Therapy. I have read many descriptions of this job and it sounds amazing! Really interesting and many different areas I could work in: home care or ER or pediatrics at the hospital. It just really caught my attention. My only concern is that many people become Respiratory Therapists (whether it be CRT or RRT) by just getting their associates degree. Does anyone know if there is any real added benefit to getting a bachelor's degree in RT? I'm worried that I will be spending more money on this degree than other RRT's and I won't be getting any added benefits. Would I be more likely to get jobs over those with just associate degrees? Would I get paid more? What kind of advancement would a BS give me in this field? Any suggestions or information would be great! Thanks!

  1. Unfortunately, you will not see a tremendous benefit to obtaining a BS in a field dominated by Associates Degrees. If you really love this field, go to Community College and get the Associates Degree. It will save you a tremendous amount of time and money. your other option is to major in nursing with an emphasis in this area. Wayyyy more money in salary... Blessings!
