- You need to know that there aren't any insane asylums anymore. There are state mental institutions that the very sick can be commited to for various amounts of time. I would try googling each state by asking for "state mental institutions of whichever state you are looking for. Each state has a number of them. These are for the criminally insane and temporary help for those without insurance.
- Well I think you'll encounter some resistance if you go looking for "insane asylums". That's a term that went out of style a long time ago. What you're looking for is an In-patient psychiatric Hospital. And there's plenty in both California and New York. Usually every county has at least one such hospital, usually in the biggest city. If it's a small county there may only be a Psychiatric ward of a general hospital. You might have trouble getting in due to the strong laws that protect patient's privacy rights. You can get a lot of help by talking to people who went into hospitals and then left. Check out forums. Just be sure not to call them :psychos, the insane, or crazies :) Good luck with your book!
- well...they don't say it because it's very very very hurtful to people with mental disorders. we are not insane people, we just have a chemical imbalance...so if you're talking about mental health centers in modern times, look up mental health in new york and california on google. but if you're talking about in the past when people did have insane asylums...type that in and new york. i think that's more interesting topic for your book because of the tortures they gave to people like me with bipolar disorder or anything else. i bet every old aslyum are all haunted now. my dad used to tell me there was one that's been vacant for 20 years 10 minutes away from our house and he said people used to jump off the water tower they had...crazy stuff. and they used to think electrocuting people would help..or put them in freezing water.
