if you get a bachelor of arts degree can you then go on to law or medical school?
I'm considering music but medical or law interests me greatly but it's not my passion like music is.

- Unless you are very lucky and very good, music will always remain your passion, but you'll need a day job to put food on the table. There are so many aspiring musicians out there, so many. I'm not telling you to give up on the music. You might be one of the few that really is that good and that lucky. I hope so. If you plan to go to med school, you should probably major in the biological sciences which would result in a BS rather than BA. Law school would probably require political science. The area of study is more important than the letters on your degree.
- Yes. For one thing, you could get a BA in music and still manage to get in a ton of premed or prelaw courses in as electives or as a double major. It certainly will show versatility. I can see where a trained musician would be attractive to a medical or law school. Music takes discipline, and many medical and law schools really enjoy a class of students with a diverse background. Such students really bring new and exciting things to the table. For another thing, there are post graduate premed programs you can go into, for people who have excellent grades but don't have the science and medical background that are the basis upon which a med or law school might admit you. This is especially true for premed. Prelaw has few or no prerequisites for most schools, but you may want to check out what the specific law schools to which you possibly aspire require from you. What I would do in your shoes is to choose a college that has both an excellent music program and an excellent prelaw or premed program. Engage in either a double major or cover your bases by taking medical or law/economics courses that would prove to any future school that you have the strong science/law background to be a productive student. If you choose to not attend a diverse college, but decide to attend a conservatory with no links to medical or law courses, you aren't out of luck. You could handle getting your premed or prelaw classes by taking summer classes at a local college or university, or by enrolling in a postgraduate prelaw or premed program. Here is a website that has a list of post-bac (after your degree) programs in medicine: http://www.cse.emory.edu/sciencenet/undergrad/post-bac.html This link is to a prelaw program which lists which courses that particular program covers. I cannot find a website that gives a list of prelaw programs. http://www.hollins.edu/undergrad/prelaw/pre-law.htm
- Law school - yes, for sure. there were several law school mates of mine with music undergrad degree. Reading critically, thinking logically, and writing clearly and concisely are the skills I would recommend developing for law school.
