Moving from Columbus, Ohio to North Carolina?
I've been looking into moving to North Carolina for a few months now. I visited Durham back when I did track in the summer (ten years ago. I wanted to know the current state of the economy? I am in the Computer filed doing technical support and wanted to know how hard it may be to find a job? My roommate has a biology degree but, currently does clinical lab work. How hard would it be for them to find a job in their field? I've been keeping an eye on jobs at Duke hospital but, wanted to know if its a good place to work? Does anyone suggest applying for jobs before moving there or after wards? Where would be the best place city, area to live or neighborhoods? We are hoping to not pay more than 900 for rent, but diverse. Any other advise anyone has please let me know.

- We started scouting the Durham area last July and made the move from NW Ohio to NC in November. It's the best thing to happen to us in years. Durham is growing leaps and bounds. If you are in the computer field you will be fine when looking for work. As for your roommate? They will have NO trouble finding a job - Durham is known as the City of Medicine. As for rents -- they seem to be all over the board. You should be able to find a nice rental in the south neighborhoods of Durham or something a little more suburban in Chapel Hill/Carrboro that is in your range. Many people working in Durham will commute the 20 - 25 miles from Hillsborough, Mebane, Roxboro or Rougemont and get a little more house for the same money. That would depend on your preferences, of course. We found it easier to make the move, establish residency and then do the job search. A lot less stress than traveling back and forth for first, second and, sometimes, third interviews. Once you get here you will love it. I know we sure do!
- Well the job markets are tight no matter where you go. You can never start too soon or too often searching for one. In addition to Duke Hospital, there's two others in Durham: Durham Regional and the VA Hospital. Plus UNC hospital in neighboring Chapel Hill. For IT/Computer jobs, also consider local government as well as companies located in Research Triangle Park. For your price range, I'd look at neighborhoods from downtown westwards. Trinity Park and Watts-Hillandale have a lot of rentals geared to college students and/or recent graduates. Many are in that price range. Northern Durham is also good for inexpensive housing.
- Too many people from Ohio here already. Don't do it. We hate people from Ohio.
