lunatic asylums?

i was just wondering what used to happen in lunatic asylums, also are straight jackets and padded cells still used today?

2. i ONLY KNOW FROM WATCHING MOVIES AND READING BOOKS BUT IT WAS TERRIBLE TO BE A NUT (LOL) OR DIFFERENT, OR CRAZY OR A SOCIAL OUTCAST OR MISFIT OR RETARDED BEFORE THIS CENTURY. YES PEOPLE WERE LOCKED UP AND CHAINED IN DARK PLACES LIKE ANIMALS, SINCE THE 8TH CENTURY. THE MUSLIMS HAD THE FIRST ASYLUM. (BEDLAM) IT WAS ALSO A FREAK SHOW WHERE PEOPLE CAME TO SEE THE PEOPLE LOCKED UP FOR ENTERTAINMENT. SO CHECK OUT WIKEPEDIA FOR MORE INFO THEY USED STRAIGHT JACKETS BACK THEN AND I THINK THEY STILL DO IF A PATIENT IS THAT DANGEROUS. OTHERWISE THEY PASSED A LAW IN THE 90'S TO NOT USE RESTRAINTS ON PATIENTS.
3. If you get uncontrollably violent, you will be given meds to calm you down. Meanwhile, you'll be restrained so that you don't hurt yourself or others. So, yes, straight jackets and padded cells are still around. The goal, however, is to not need them. Most mentally ill people manage their illnesses and live relatively normal lives these days. Btw, what we no longer have are asylums. We have mental health wards in regular hospitals and a few mental health facilities.
