How long does it take for a potential employer to call back for a third round interview?

I recently interviewed in large hospital for an entry level research position (I had previously interviewed with the same company 3x for the same position, diff. dept but HR called to tell me the doctors on my 3rd interview recommended me for another dept. based on my interests and goals and that they felt I was a viable candidate). I had my first of 2 interviews with that dept on Monday but today it is Friday and I have not heard back. My interview lasted 25 mins, the woman I interviewed with seemed very impressed, told me they were in the middle of interviews but would call me back for a 3rd interview when they reached a decision; she was not sure when that would be. I don't want to be a nag, but when would it be okay for me to call HR again? I have only called once before to check the status of an app, but HR and I have spoken a bunch of times regarding other things. As this is a large NYC hospital, should I expect to be waiting longer than a week? Do I have a good shot at this job since I was recommended by doctors I had met with earlier for it? Any feedback is very much appreciated.

  1. In the world of HR in largely staffed hospital a week feels like a day to us, while a week feels like a month to you. What you need to understand is that they are working on several open positions and the most critical jobs take preference over the others, even if you are in the interviewing process the next person you have to meet w/may not be available until next week or even longer, they probably even had interviews scheduled throughout this week, so they aren't going to call you back until they know who they want back for a 3rd interview. It's hard for HR and Mgrs, directors and everyone in between to line up everything perfectly so this its not odd to wait this long for a large company w/several openings when I say several there's I'm sure a NY Hospital at least 50 or more. If things feel like they went well you just need to be patient and wait, worrying won't make it go any faster, I always tell the people I interview I will get back w/then when we have a decision or ready to schedule the next interview, if you don't hear from me that we aren't at that point yet, but eventually you will hear from me. I have to be that specific otherwise people call me the next day, we don't call you until we have news. What most people don't realize is that if a Recruiter is working on say just 20 jobs, and each job averages about 3 interviews, and some have 2nd or 3rd interviews w/other people, the recruiter is probably interviewing every 1/2 hour all day every day and has to do everything else in between, not to mention follow up w/people who are involved w/the 2nd or 3rd interviews, and then new jobs keep opening everyday and you have to post those internally and work on in-house and company transfers as well, then you add everyone calling to see what's going on with the interview they had, that's more time the Recruiter is pulled away from working on a job to follow up w/people. What I'm saying is this is a busier job than people can even imagine, and I'm only explaining this to you so you have an idea how busy they are, and it's not that you don't have the job, but when it's time for them to follow up w/you they will. However, if it's over a week and you haven't heard anything you can call and follow-up, just ask if they have heard anything on the position, but don't be surprised if they tell you they are still considering you, no decisions have been made and they will call you when they get to the next step. It may sound like a cold answer but until you hear that they selected another candidate you are to remain under the understanding you are still a viable candidate that they are considering for the position. Just be patient, I know I answered one of your questions before and told you a short interview means nothing, especially if you felt it went well. HR has been faithful in keeping in touch w/you they aren't going to stop now. You will hear something when they have something to say. Hospital Recruiter, 10+yrs exp.
