Does anyone know if there were any "Insane Asylums" in Britain (either working or abandoned) during the 1940's?
I know it sounds like a strange question, but any answers or names would be really appreciated!

- There still are. When i was growing up there was this insane place called "delapole" down the road and if we heard the siren we had to run home as fast as we could or run to a friends house. Needless to say we went and played chicken but thats what kids do. This was around 1992 (ish)
- Yes, for your information there is a notable Asylum in Britain: The House of Commons
- Here's some links that may help you. Good luck! http://www.mdx.ac.uk/WWW/STUDY/MHHTim.htm#1940 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychiatric_hospital#United_Kingdom
- Yes - there was Menston Hospital near Ilkley in Yorkshire, subsequently the name was changed to Highroyds Hospital. Now all been closed and currently being developed as a community to be known as Highroyds village. Much of the original asylum has been converted into private apartments. Hope this helps Geoff
- Indeed there where. One of the first was High Royds Hospital and it was opened in 1888. It was still going strong in 1948 for the birth of the NHS. It was also one of the pioneers in the use of lithium to prevent recurrent episodes of depression and mania, while more controversial research undertaken at the same time included surgical practices to apply Electro Convulsive Therapy directly to brain. The source i used has more listed so its worth a look.
- Tooting Bec. My gg grandmother died there 1920ish. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?MAB-TootingBec/MAB-TootingBec.shtml
- There were many around London - Colney Hatch and Shenley in the north, a large number to the south in the Epsom area.
