1. While I'm sure there are great hospitals in NYC, I'm not familiar with them. I went to UPENN which isn't too far and I had a wonderful surgeon and endocrinologist. Don't settle make sure she goes to a specialist. Good luck!

The New York Thyroid Center, which is part of Colombia University Medical Center/ New York Presbyterian, is one of the top places in NYC. http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/thyroid/ I'd suggest going there for the surgery, but if it's not possible, try to find a surgeon who does at least 200 thyroidectomies a year.
3. Your selection of a surgeon is what you need to focus on. Select one who is doing her type of surgery routinely (100+ per year). Medicine is just like every other profession . . . practice makes perfect.
