If mental institutions or insane asylums had existed in early Christianity, would we have religion today?

- Yes, we would. You underestimate the craftiness, cunning, and ruthlessness of the functionally insane. And they're really the ones that make the base spirituality that religion co-opts. You don't need to BE them to steal their ideas. Then you just need a greedy person to make it into a religion. There are lots of greedy people in the world. Take Paul for example...
