What do you think of the old mental asylums?
I think every city and every town has a derelict asylum, a big renovated mansion left for the elements and decay. I feel attracted to these places, the fact many people lived and died in those buildings sharing happy and sad moments. I believe their purpose was benign during their hay days, they didn't have the proper medications to treat people and send them back into society, since their use is dead now and they are nothing more than a relic and symbol of the past, what do you think of them?

- I'm sure glad they let me go!
- I belong there. ;P
- I think you should go live in one.
- Inhumane.
- its can sad bout how they treated them but at least they're better off now =)
- I need to be transferred there yesterday.
- Oh old lady, you are so so right. * blah blah blah *
- yeah it very much a relic of the past
- I find abandoned places fascinating. It's always great when "Ghost Hunters" does an asylum episode. I also LOVE all of the old places (especially asylums) on www.forgottenoh.com.
- Their sad places, gee , you brought me down......
- I find them very intriguing!! I'm always curious to look up the history, read the stories of the patients. I agree that during the time period that most were used, there wasn't much else they knew to do.
- Look up Benjamin Rush. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and he improved the asylums.
- I was in one of those for months - all I could say was It Stinks - But the staff was very nice. They agreed that, "Yes, Mr. Sherman, everything stinks."
- I think they should make them museums. They have history and antiques of old medical practicies. I love watching those t.v. specials where they go and spend the night in abandoned asylums. It is creepy and interesting all in one.
- Are you fishing for sociopaths or something dood?
- Uhm.. they seem ok I guess. At least they let me use Yahoo Answers.
- Yea, there was a place near where I grew up (Northville MI). It was torn down before i had a chance to see it.
- There is a spooky one in Danvers, Massachusetts.....an old brick building that sits high on a hill. I was supposed to be a regular torture chamber and some say it is haunted. They are trying to make condo out of it. Who the hell would ever live there. It's haunted as far as I am concerned.
- i think they should reopen them too many nutters out here,,,, as long as they dont find me hehe...........
- This is a depressing question, Especially at 12.35am *yawns*
- I'm with you all the way on that issue;it's a sham how the SYSTEM our society works. if you can't do for yourself you are nothing I can be a witness to this. I have M.S. as a wheelchair user I feel the pain from the society on a daily basic .
- i have a postcard for a mental asylum from about 1940. they are still in business. i was thinking of writing "wish you were here" and sending it to someone i dislike, but i'm too polite for that....
- My missus worked in one for many years dear Judge, and the place used to scare the crap out of me,every time i had to go in.
