Job offer... is this a scam? If so, how would they scam me?
I replied to a posting on Craigslist asking for some one who could take care of their grandmother. The listing was flagged, and I can't figure out why. Something just doesn't seem right about it, but I can't figure out what... here's the email I got from him. Does it sound like a scam to you? Hello, Thanks for your response to the job position on the craigslist.I am very sorry for my late in respond to your email. I need a HCA for my Grandma (Rose) to help her in dressing, meals, bathing, bed to chair, housekeeping, shopping, some errands and probably medical check up for her when needed to. She is recovering from a stroke, so she will need pretty much standard care including dressing, transferring, all bathroom care (brushing teeth, hair, care with bed/leg bags, bowel program, showering) etc. You can put up your own schedule that would not get in between your working hours. You just need to let her know when you're free and able to see her and she would pick out for those hours. If at any point in time she needs to be taken to the hospital it would be separately paid for.All i want is a reliable person, caring and trustworthy who will be able to take good care of my Grandma whenever the need arises. She is currently not in the area but need to get someone lined up before she arrives. Her arrival date would be sent to you later on. I am offering you $500 weekly and you will make yourself available the times needed are 1hrs in morning Mon, Wed, Friday and 2hrs in the evening for the same day. I'd like you to know that my financier here in united state will be sending your payment that will cover your first week payment and my grandma mobility expenses via an authorized certified check.I want you to know that after you have you have deduct your first week payment, the remaining funds will be sent to the mobility agent for her travel expenses, accommodation and any other expenses.Let me know if you're fine with the arrangement. I require you then to send me the following details : FULL NAME: MAILING ADDRESS: CITY: STATE: ZIP-CODE: CELL PHONE: HOME PHONE: BEST TIME TO CALL: Possible Working hrs: Any mode of identity: I'll send the details to my assistant to prepare and send the payment across to you with her travel itineary and whatever else needs to be done.Hope to hear from you asap. I believe you will be able to take care of her as good as you can. Thanks

- Craigslist is a chance you take. Have you watched the news?
- The check will bounce, you will have your $500, but if you send the money to the :"mobility agent" after the check bounces, you will have to make good on the entire check - in other words, you will have sent money to the scammer and you will never see "Rose" nor your money back.
- They will send you a money order, then the amount will be much more than agreed and you have to send it back to him... You will deposit "that" cashier check/money order" in your account, then the bank will give you the difference based on your money deposited with them, you send it to "this people, offering the job", and you sent them good money from a money order that was fake? who is responsible? well you will se the bank after you and you will have to give it back to the bank or face consequences, so yes, it is fraud and if you dont believe me, try, but never send money back and notify your bank that you want to just check. Be careful!!
- sounds like a scam ....he should be going through an agency. and what the heck is he even doing talking about money now anyway? he should only be asking for applications at this point.
- What steve D said makes sense. Sometimes it takes your bank weeks or moths to clear a cheque - in the meantime you've sent the money to the 'mobility agent' -- then you find out that their cheque bounced. And yeah - it all sounds weird - why is he talking about money already and why would his grandma only need you a few days a week and how could she work around your schedule? Makes no sense.
- Absolutely a scam. The check they send you includes grandma's expenses and your $500. So they send you a check for $2000. You deposit it at your bank and send the "mobility agent" $1500. A few weeks later the check will turn out to be fake, and the bank wants their $2000 back - from you. You're out the $1500 you sent to the "mobility agent" - and guaranteed, you won't be able to find the agent or the "grandson"
- it sounds like a scam, what you need to do in order to find out that if this is a scam or not reply back to him and get his information and if he doesn't comply then it is a scam and if he asks you why you desire this information tell him you want to make sure that this isn't a scam of any sort tell him that you want to do a criminal back ground check and that you have read and heard about other women, or young girls (18-21) answering ads from Craig's list to only find out that they have been either "raped" or "murdered" or "raped and murdered" because they answered the ad for someone to come and take care of a sick loved one. So think about what i have just told you to do and use your best judgment and get the required information and use it to do a criminal or a regular back ground check to make sure that this is on the up and up and get his grandmothers full name and the hospital she was in recovering from her stroke
- If this is not a scam, then ask the job offeree for some form of identification, i.e., passport, drivers license, permanent address [not a P.O. box], a wire transfer I.D., bank reference, etc. We believe that it's a scam and no such information will be forthcoming. Good luck!
- Almost 100% certain this is a scam. Go check it out on scamwarners.org and I'll bet you'll find the same details of something similar. No matter what the story is (and they have a lot of different stories), the way scammers operate is usually to give you a check that is for several thousand dollars then they ask you to send them money back via Western Union or Money Gram. They want you to do it quickly so that they get their money before your bank finds out the check is no good. If you have not done so, please read all the warnings posted on Craigslist about scams. Good luck.
