Medical Malpractice

High school senior who has decided to pursue a career in health and wants to go to top med school, pipe dream?

So in my four years at a rough high school I have discovered myself. After doing tons of volunteer hours at a hospital and spending time helping out doctors, I have decided that I want to be a doctor. My high school GPA is a little bit on the low end right now due to me having a rough first two years of high school (blending into a magnet school setting and everything). My unweighted GPA is a 3.2 after having a great junior year at a very competitive magnet school and my SAT score is a 1940 (plan on raising it). I want to go to Johns Hopkins, UVA, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown or Northwestern for med school. I have decided that I want to pursue a major in Biochemistry when I get to college. So far my college choices are Ohio State University University of Georgia (because of HOPE Scholarship) George Mason University Georgia Tech (kid last year got in with a 3.1 GPA) and UMass Amherst So here are my questions: 1. Is it possible to go to a top ranked med school (top 20) if you do great at a smaller name college (not an Ivy) and get the top MCAT score? 2. Would it be a wise decision for me to do my best the first two years at a smaller university and then transfer to a bigger name college (perhaps a top rank)? Eri, thanks that is what I plan on doing for transfer. Parents say they will be able to pay for my final two years of undergrad.

  1. 1. Yes. You can get into a top med school from any college or university if you impress them enough. It's just easier coming from a top school because they know you worked hard for that GPA. 2. If you can, but keep in mind med school is expensive - don't waste money on undergrad if possible. And many med school recommend you take your premed classes from the school you graduate from, so you might want to put some off until junior year if you're going to transfer.
