Where can I download Windows XP Service Pack 2 without losing all of my wireless signals?

I have a computer build by hand that's running Windows XP Home edition. I ran automatic updates but I had installed service pack 2 for windows xp and then I lost all of my wireless signals. I have AT&T and my computer is upstairs and my modem is downstairs so I use a 2Wire wireless receiver and I use 2WIRE manager because the regular thing that connects my computer to the internet doesn't work right. When I had download XP Service Pack 2 from http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html and then when it rebooted I had lost all of my wireless internet signals. 2WIRE manager didn't work either. Then when I uninstalled the program my computer crashed. Is it the website or my computer that's doing this? I have activated the computer now but I didn't register it. If I have to register it, then how do I register it? And what does registering your computer really do for your computer? This computer also was build by hand in the University of Chicago hospitals. My dad works there and his friends son build me this computer when I was really little and didn't really know how to put together a computer. It had crashed 3 times now because of that service pack. Should I just download the service pack from the Microsoft Website?

  1. It sounds like a pretty old box. it also sounds like it was not kept current and has fallen way behind on Service Packs and patches. Your going to have a real challenge getting it up to current standards now that MS has declared XP a "mature" product and ended most forms of support. As far as I know, a pre-SP2 installation is not even allowed to download from the MS website. I think you options are kind of limited, but here are my suggestions. 1. The best shot to salvage this box (IMHO) is to download and burn an Ubuntu installation disk and install Unbuntu on the machine. That will get you a modern, supported OS that has a fair chance of working with your wireless system. 2. Look at a new machine. The cost of Windows today is nearly 25% of the cost of a new box. 3. If you must have Windows and want to save the box, buy a copy of XP SP3 and install it. XP is still available from most retailers like CDW.
  2. Your best solution is to use the Updates from Microsoft. You can download them directly if you aren't using Internet Explorer or you can turn on automatic updates from the control panel. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx or for SP2 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en The 2wire adapter can and will work just fine using the Windows Manager, chances are very good that when you installed the update that manager was activated. It really is easier to use than a third party one. If you want to use the 2wire manager, you need to "re-install" the package after the update. Downloading updates from anyplace besides Microsoft carries extreme risks! You have no idea what else was added. Viruses, Trojans, Backdoors etc have all been found on some of these sites!
