How did the early hospitals in America, being charities, get funding?

The early hospitals in America treated patients as charities. Doctors were unpaid and so were the nurses. The staff would live in the hospital as they had no pay. My question is, what external funding did they receive to run the hospital? Funding for drugs or equipment and things of the sort, they had to somehow have some kind of funding to purchase those things right? Thanks in advance.
