Why am I fascinated with the evil and dark parts of life (i.e. Gang life, Mental Hospitals, Subways in NYC)?

This is sort of an odd question but I am hoping someone will assist me in making a connection to why I am so fascinated by things like this. I tend to be extremely interested in human sanity, and shootings and Gang Life, or Mental hospitals, and another example the Subways of NYC and the dark evil passage ways and trains. I also enjoy "evil" things like the movie Shutter Island or "dark" music and physchology. Please any help or explanations? Links to books I could read to understand this?

1. I had a extreme curiosity about serial killers, murder, death etc.. I was a teen in the mid 80s and my Parents thought something was wrong with me. I just finished my Associates in Criminology and plan on starting my Bachelors to become a Probation Officer. I found this so intriguing, because its taboo, I wanted to know who and why someone chooses to do the unmentionable things in life. You are not sick, or creepy. Pursue a career in your desire. My Nephew became a Mortician. He always had a interest in Death. He is completely normal.
2. I can only assume it's because you've never really seen anything evil or bad in real life. If you're interested in seeing the dark side of life go to any low income, high crime neighborhood or a third world country.
