Whats a great book about psycho criminals or asylums or stuff like that?

I love how psychotic the criminals in batman are but i want to read story about what turned them into psycho killers like them. I just prefer a full length novel over a comic book.

2. ...You want to get inside the head of a psychotic criminal or asylum inmate? I think the newest version of the Joker (portrayed by Heath Ledger) was very good a that. He wasn't just evil, he was mentally off his rocker. There's also the show Dexter where the main character is a serial killer. And while he's not a psycho killer, there's this fan-made story about a young Dr. Jekyll. What's cool is that this story shows what someone sees on the outside ( a raving lunatic) and what's actually going on in his head. A very good one to read. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1492245/1/ and of course the tale of Sweeney Todd. Not very in depth psychologically. His motives are pretty clear cut there, but he's a majorly famous serial killer/barber borne of a pennydreadful (small story/tabloid) in 1800's London. And of course the 2007 (08?) movie starring Johnny Depp as Todd.
