How can I get patient lists for insane asylums in the 1910s?

I am doing research on my family history. The rumor is that my great-great-grandpa was put in an insane asylum in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I am not sure which one, but have no clue where to get the records, especially for the asylums which are now condemned and rundown. Any hints on where to go? It was a big family secret and no one has any information!
