Legally, how long does a baby have to stay in the hospital after birth in North Carolina?
I do not want to stay any longer than I have to. How long does the baby have to stay, by law in the state of North Carolina?

- 18 years.
- Not how it works. It's based on the HEALTH of the baby. Already not wanting to be inconvenienced by a baby. Nice.
- You don't have to stay at all. As the legal guardian of the baby, you have the right to refuse medical care. You don't even need to give birth in a hospital, if you do not want to. However, some hospitals will contact child protective services if you attempt to leave with the baby before the recommended 48 hours. If the baby is healthy, it's unlikely that they will do more than interview you, but it would be a hassle. If the baby is seriously ill, CPS will likely force the baby to stay in the hospital and may open a child abuse investigation.
- ?? There is no law that even says you have to GO to the hospital. You can leave 5 minutes after birth if you're up to it.
- Call the hospital and ask.
