Medical Malpractice

why were people sent to asylums in victorian britain?

i'm trying to research the various "illnesses" that people were sent to asylums for during the 1850s onwards, but all i can find so far is information on why women were incarcerated, such as hysteria, nymphomania and anorexia. can anyone shed any light on other conditions that affected men too?

  1. Any and all things we treat for mental illness were candidates. In reality, it was a good way for family to get rid of another family member! The treatment was abysmal.
