How much money does America spend on insane asylums?

I need some kind of money figure from a reliable source. Include source in your answer, please.

1. America does not have anything called "insane asylums." This is not Victorian England. Very few mentally ill people (other than those who have committed a crime but are not in prison due to a verdict of "not guilty by reason of insanity") are actually locked up. This can be considered good or bad, but the point is that that is the reality. Many mentally ill people unable to care for themselves are on the street. You did not ask what the US pays for medical care for mentally ill people not in institutions, which is substantial.
2. We need to spend a lot more, I'd say.
