Where can you stay for cheap on the Upper East side of NYC, near Mt. Sinai hospital?

I am having surgery due to cancer on May 16th. Though I am an adult, my mother wants to stay in New York City to be nearby while I am in there. I will be there for about 5 days. We have been looking at prices of hotels nearby and they are outrageous! She cannot afford them. Does anyone have any suggestions for someplace nearby that she could stay at that is affordable? By the way, she is COMPLETELY uncomfortable navigating around the city by herself. The hospital provided a list of hotels that offer a discounted rate for family of patients. The discounted rate for one of the hotels was $495!! That is why I was hoping there was a unknown resource that someone could share with me.

1. Please believe me; if I knew where to stay cheap anywhere in NYC or even Jersey, I wouldn't have moved to Florida after 65 yrs.
2. Ask the hospital. In most big cities the local hospitals have lists of negotiated special prices.
3. Ronald McDonald House may be able to help. I think they usually work with families who have children hospitalized but they probably have sources of information to help you.
