  1. There are many teaching hospitals in NY (NYU, Cornell NY, Columbia Presbyterian, Belvue, Kings County/Down State , Beth Israel, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Mt. Sinai,Beth Israel etc. etc.) it will be easy to find a job. If you live out in Queens it will be easier to keep your car and at some hospitals out of Manhattan driving to work might not be a great problem. Many people here don't have cars and many of us who do use the subway when possible. The good news is that if you live out where its reasonable to keep a car the cost of living will be lower than if you live near the subway.
  2. I have friends who do drive to work every day with no problem. For jobs, check the Sunday New York Times, and cost of living: I should think that with your profession, you will be ok. It is true that you do not need a car, but I have noticed that my friends who have cars and use them to get to and from work are less stressed and woebegone than the ones who use public transportation. This is especially true in the winter since they do not need to stand at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to come, or walk several blocks to the (cold) subway station and then take the train home. We do have a fantastic transportation system here, but it is very much easier to drive. This is true in summer too ! You can take a whole waternmelon home far easier in a car, and a Christmas tree, too ! And then, it is no problem to drive upstate to Bear Mountain State Park, for example, to escape the city and smell the fresh country air. That makes things a lot easier. x
