It is the oldest *public* hospital in the country, but there are many *private* hospitals whose foundings antedate Bellevue's by many years. If you need the answer for a report (or even to settle a bet), then Bellevue is almost certainly what you're looking for. If, however, you're looking for a suitable place for psychiatric services for someone you know, I recommend New York Presbyterian's Clinic -- it's a much more pleasant experience, and if a member of my family required psychiatric treatment, it's where I'd send them.
